For the MOT Satellite 2020 exhibition “Hi-Five – Voices of the Heart” at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, I contributed to Takuya Takahashi × Shinya Matsuyama’s works “The Story of Lightning Dreaming of a Boat and Catfish” and “She Subtracts As If Speaking” by designing innovative water basin installations. These pieces explored the theme of perceptual dissonance through irregular quadrilateral forms that, when viewed from specific angles, appear to defy perspective.

The works employ ultrasonic technology to create the illusion of water droplets falling from the ceiling, marking an evolution of Mr. Matsuyama’s ongoing water basin series. I was responsible for the structural engineering and design updates that brought this vision to life, maintaining the delicate balance between technological precision and poetic expression that characterizes these pieces. The designs challenge viewers’ perceptions while creating a meditative space where technology and nature intersect through carefully calculated distortions of space and reflection.
